Overview
An engagement is a persistent place in Nylon where the documents, instructions and context for a piece of client work live. Set it up once, and every question you ask inside that engagement is grounded in the material and brief you've attached, so you don't re-upload files or re-explain the background each time.
It works with your existing files. Upload documents directly, or add documents and folders from SharePoint or Outlook, and choose whether to keep them in sync as the files change. Nylon does not store a master copy of your documents and does not train on your data.
If your firm uses other terminology, an Admin can rename Engagements to Matters (or something else) in settings. The terms mean the same thing.
Creating an engagement
Engagement Creation Wizard
Open the history tab and toggle to engagements, select Create engagement.
Enter a name. This is the only required field; everything else is optional and can be added later.
Add members of your team working on the same engagement, to share the context and research with them.
Optionally add a short brief in the Instructions field (up to 500 characters) — write what you'd brief a junior on, such as the client, the jurisdiction and what to watch for.
Optionally add sources (see below).
Save. You can now ask questions inside the engagement, and every answer uses the context you've set up.
Adding sources
Inside an engagement, open the Sources tab and choose how to add material:
Upload a document directly.
Add documents and folders from SharePoint. Adding a folder brings in everything in it. If you only want part of a folder, add a more specific subfolder.
Add email threads from Outlook.
Supported file types are PDF, RTF and DOCX with readable (machine-readable) text. Files that are too large, or that don't meet these requirements, aren't ingested, so they're not stored or referenced in answers. There's no fixed limit on how much you can upload, but large uploads take time to process.
Sync is optional. For a folder or document added from SharePoint, turn on sync so your queries use the latest content as the files change. Leave it off to freeze the content. Sync lets you make sure you're always referencing the documents and information on your file, helpful as engagements progress. Emails with sync enabled pull any replies on the thread automatically.
Briefing the AI with instructions
The Instructions field is a short free-text brief (up to 500 characters) applied to every query in the engagement. Use it for standing context you'd otherwise re-type — the client name, scope of the work, how you want to work on the file and anything you want flagged. Edit it any time from the engagement side panel.
Inviting team members
Open the engagement and use the team field to invite colleagues by name. Nylon respects your existing SharePoint permissions, so a colleague only sees content they're already permitted to access. Nylon doesn't add a separate permissions system on top.
Working inside an engagement
When you're in an engagement, an engagement chip appears on the query header showing which engagement and mode you're in. The side panel has tabs for Header, Context, Sources and Reviewed for this query. The Reviewed tab shows what Nylon read versus what it cited, giving you a research trail. All fields are editable inline from the panel.
Keeping content current or frozen
Sync is optional and off until you turn it on. Turn it on for a SharePoint folder or document so linked content stays current as the files change. To freeze content during a review, leave sync off or turn it off again.
Microsoft connections follow Microsoft's standard 90-day sign-in window. When a connection is close to expiring you'll see a signal in the engagement; select reauthenticate to restart it.
For Admins and Owners
Engagement terminology (Engagement or Matters) is configurable in settings. Engagement context is available on all plans, with no separate charge. Nylon does not train on your data and does not store canonical copies of your documents. Integrations need to be enabled and authenticated to enable uploading from SharePoint and Outlook.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Is my data, or my client's data, used to train the AI?
A: No. Nylon does not train on customer data. Engagement context simply gives the AI the right context for a specific piece of work; no model retains or learns from your information.
Q: Does this replace SharePoint or our document management system?
A: No. Nylon isn't a document management system and doesn't keep master copies of your files. SharePoint remains the source of truth.
Q: Can I ask a question across all my clients or engagements at once?
A: Not yet. You work within one engagement at a time.
Q: Which file types are supported?
A: PDF, RTF and DOCX with readable (machine-readable) text. Files that are too large or don't meet the requirements aren't ingested.
Q: Can I add only part of a SharePoint folder?
A: Adding a folder brings in everything in it. For a narrower set, add a more specific subfolder.
Q: Can I use a meeting transcript as a source?
A: Not at launch. Meeting transcripts as an engagement source are planned for late Q3 2026.
Troubleshooting
A document I uploaded doesn't seem to be used
Check the file is a supported type (PDF, RTF or DOCX with readable text) and isn't too large, confirm it's in the folder you added, and that the connection is still authenticated (reauthenticate if prompted). Re-add the file if needed.
My answers don't reflect a recent change to a file
Check that sync is turned on for that source (it's optional and may be off to freeze content), and that the Microsoft connection is still authenticated.
A colleague can't see content in the engagement
Nylon respects SharePoint permissions. Confirm the colleague has access to that source in SharePoint.
