Using the Nylon AI connector

Overview

The Nylon AI connector lets you search and read the Nylon library from inside the AI tools you already use. It works with Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini. You must have the Adviser or Elite plan to access this connector, Starter users will need to upgrade to access.

Nylon provides the authoritative NZ, AU and UK legal and tax sources. Your AI tool does the drafting and conversation, grounded in those sources, with citations and links back to Nylon so you can check them. It connects using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that more AI tools are adding support for.

Connecting Nylon to your AI tool

  1. In Nylon, open Profile and find the AI connector section.

  2. Copy the connection address using the copy button.

  3. In your AI tool, open its connectors or MCP settings and add a new connector using the address you copied.

  4. Sign in to Nylon when your AI tool prompts you. This authorises that tool to search and read on your behalf. No passwords or tokens are shared between tools.

  5. Ask your AI tool to find or read Nylon sources as part of your normal prompts.

Each tool signs in separately, so you stay in control of which tools have access.

What you can do

  • Find sources: ask your AI tool to search the Nylon database. It returns ranked results with the title, source type, jurisdiction, citation, date and currency, plus a link back to the source in Nylon. Your AI tool uses this to generate its response.

  • Read a document: ask it to open a specific source and it returns the full text to work from.

Your AI tool decides when to call Nylon based on what you ask. You can also ask it directly, e.g. "Search Nylon for the current NZ bright-line rules and cite them."

Checking citations

Results link back to the original source in Nylon. Click through to confirm the source before you rely on anything your AI tool drafts. Nylon grounds the answer; you remain responsible for checking the output, as with any AI tool.

For Admins and Owners: access and limits

The AI connector is available on Adviser and Elite. Usage is unlimited within your plan and does not use Pro credits. It does not appear on Starter.

There is a cap on how many connections each user can hold at once per AI tool, to keep accounts secure. You can connect an unlimited number of different tools.

To prevent your team from using the AI connector, you can disable the feature under Organisation Settings.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Which AI tools work with it?

A: Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini. The tool itself needs to offer MCP connector settings.

Q: My tool isn't listed. Can I still use it?

A: Any other MCP-compatible tool can be added, but it needs a request to our technical team. Tell us which tools you want and we will look at adding them. You can do this through the chat widget in the bottom right.

Q: Does it use Pro credits?

A: No. On Adviser and Elite, usage is unlimited within your plan.

Q: Is my data or my clients' data used to train AI?

A: No. Nylon does not train on customer data and is ISO 27001 certified. Your connected AI tool's own terms govern what it does with the text, so review them for tools outside Nylon.

Q: Can it write or save back into Nylon?

A: No. The connector is for searching and reading. Saving to a folder, engagement or matter, and uploading documents, are not available yet.

Q: Can it search more than one jurisdiction at once?

A: Not in a single request. Your AI tool searches one jurisdiction (NZ, AU or UK) at a time and can combine several searches if needed.

Troubleshooting

The AI connector isn't in my settings

Check your plan. It is available on Adviser and Elite only. If you are on Starter, speak to your account owner about moving up. Or, if you see the below screenshot that "AI tool connections are turned off for this account", your admin may have disabled access for your team.

My AI tool won't connect

Confirm the tool supports AI connectors and that you pasted the full connection address. Remove and re-add the connector, then sign in to Nylon again.

I can't add a custom connector in Claude

If you use Claude on an Enterprise or Team account, your Claude admin will need to first add the custom connector here: https://claude.ai/new?modal=add-custom-connector#settings/customize-connectors

An "unverified" badge appears

This means your AI tool isn't yet recognised in Nylon's known-clients registry. Connecting still works; the badge is informational.

I've hit a connection limit

There is a cap on connections per tool. Disconnect an unused connection for that tool and try again.
